Last Minute Halloween Craft Idea: Spooky Macaroon Decor.

October 28, 2024

Halloween Macaroon Decorations

Inspiration

This cute and fun idea came to mind when browsing the Christmas aisles last year (2023) at Hobby Lobby. During the first week of October, I was looking for pumpkins and fall foliage when I happened to walk by one of the aisles that already had Christmas items on display. I found these adorable macaroon ornaments that came in a set of three. I bought six sets of them, knowing I would use some for Thanksgiving and Christmas too.

Materials

I will list all the materials I used and where I got them from. Most of the items can be found online, on Amazon, and other craft stores. You can also get your materials from different brands and create different spooky designs!

Material items needed for diy Halloween project

Items list:

  1. Christmas Macaroon Ornaments (Hobby Lobby)

  2. Delta Creative Matte Acrylic paint (Target)

  3. Paintbrushes (Target and Hobby Lobby)

  4. Superglue and Elmer's glue (Target)

  5. Glitter, confetti glitter, and googly eyes (Michaels and Hobby lobby)

Before Starting

Here are some tips before starting! First, lay something down on a flat surface to help keep your area clean. I used parchment paper, but you can use a towel or anything you have on hand. Second, I recommend having an idea or design you might want to use. Either draw it out on a piece of paper or have an example photo next to you. Also, Pinterest has many pictures for inspiration if needed. Third, keep something next to you to wipe your hands on. I always get a phone call when my hands are full of glitter and glue! I absolutely hate the feeling on my hands, but lately I have been wearing medical gloves. It's a game changer and I love not having to scrub my hands for hours trying to get junk off. Lastly, just have fun with it and go with the flow!

First Step

First grab one of the macaroon ornaments and place it in front of you. If you don't want to hang them up, you can use a pair of pliers to take the hook off. if you decide to do so, just paint over that spot to cover it up. If you decide you want to keep it, you can replace the ribbon with a different one or keep its original.

Second Step

Take whichever color you want to use for your base and paint the macaroon ornaments to your liking. Once done painting your base, let dry completely before adding your designs.

Third Step

Once the base colors are done you can add your designs. If you're doing a Mummy (Like mine in the photos) macaroon you need to paint layers on top of each other. I kept adding layers when one was somewhat dried . I did about three layers, but you can do less or more. Another way you can make he Mummy macaroon is by taking a paint brush and dunking it into your white paint. With a freshly dipped paintbrush, move it back and fourth as it drips on the macaroon forming the wrapped Mummy look.

If you skipped the Mummy look you can now paint any designs on the macaroons. Some ideas that you can paint are spider webs, Frankenstein, Jack-o-Lantern, candy corn colors, ghosts, bats, haunted house, etc. Once done painting set it aside to dry completely before adding any glitter or other items.

Final Step

Once dried, you can go ahead and add glitter, googly eyes, and any other items you want. You can use regular Elmer's glue, but for the googly eyes I used superglue. For the glitter I used the Elmer's glue and let the glitter stay on for a few minutes before shaking the extra glitter off. If you're doing it around the edges, I suggest doing one side at a time just in case things get too messy. Once completely done let it dry for at least a few hours. After they are dry you can place them in the kitchen or wherever you find best suited!  This craft is easy and a quick last minute craft idea to do alone, with friends, children, or even during Halloween Parties! You can go ahead and skip the rest of the post or you can read the "Wrapping Up" section.

Wrapping Up

I will never say this enough, but I completely love Halloween. I grew up loving it thanks to my uncle and aunt. They would turn their home inside and outside into a haunted house. Many people would come and see their work. If I remember correctly, it was in our local newspaper or news channel. It was a pretty big event as well, because living in South Florida we don't get seasons and they had to bring the seasons to us. Friends and family members would also help each year setting up and taking it all down. It typically would take about a month to do both. It was always worth it though. They would also perform their own choreographic witchy dances and would perform Thriller in the the streets. The theme was always a bit of everything, but mostly horror movies were a big part of it. They would spend all year getting ready and it's something I hold onto dearly. Unfortunately, they passed away when I was in fifth grade due to an accident. What creeps me the most is they were going to do their very first themed haunted house that upcoming Halloween. That themed house was going to be ghost and the paranormal. Nineteen years later, I still get spooked by it. I hold onto those memories tightly and hope to do something similar one day in their honor. There were also some weird events before and many afterwards too. It's too much to get into in this post, but maybe one day I will talk more on those events. With that, I dedicated my first blog post to my uncle and aunt, which happens to be on the day before Halloween!

Happy Halloween to everyone and stay safe.
